Shibaura Machine and AM Batteries will collaborate on developing innovative electrode manufacturing solutions to meet the growing demand for high-performance, environmentally sustainable Li-ion battery technologies.

The global lithium-ion battery market is expanding rapidly, driven by demand across multiple industries including consumer electronics, automotive applications such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and large-scale industrial and residential energy storage systems.

As investments in battery manufacturing facilities grow, so too does the need to cut costs, lower energy consumption, and reduce environmental impact. Traditional manufacturing processes often rely on organic solvents and contribute significantly to CO2 emissions, prompting the industry to seek sustainable alternatives. To help address these challenges, AM Batteries has pioneered a “dry electrode manufacturing method’. branded as Powder to Electrode™, which eliminates the need for organic solvents. This innovative approach reduces CO2 emissions, simplifies production, and lowers manufacturing costs compared to traditional wet processes.

The start-up provides battery manufacturers with turnkey dry electrode equipment, while fostering a broader dry coating ecosystem. In 2024, AM Batteries earned recognition as one of “America’s Top Greentech Companies” and “The Best Inventions of 2024” by TIME Magazine.

Shibaura Machine, a long-standing leader in the global battery manufacturing equipment market, has supplied lithium-ion battery separator film production lines worldwide. This investment positions the company at the forefront of the emerging dry electrode market, while preparing for advancements in all-solid-state batteries.

Of this new collaboration, Lie Shi, CEO of AM Batteries, noted: “As a leader in dry battery electrode technology, AM Batteries is committed to transforming the way batteries are manufactured. Shibaura Machine’s investment and collaboration bring invaluable expertise and resources that will accelerate our ability to scale and provide turn-key solutions to battery manufacturers worldwide. Together, we are setting a new standard for innovation in the energy storage industry.”
