Power Integrations, a provider of high-voltage integrated circuits (ICs) for energy-efficient power conversion, has introduced a wide-creepage package option for its InnoSwitch™3-AQ flyback automotive switcher IC, designed to meet the stringent requirements of next-generation EVs.
The new IC features a drain-to-source pin creepage distance of 5.1 mm, eliminating the need for conformal coating. The IC complies with the IEC60664-1 standard, simplifying manufacturing and increasing system reliability.
According to Power Integrations, the 1700 V-rated InnoSwitch3-AQ IC incorporates a silicon carbide (SiC) primary switch and is capable of delivering up to 80 watts of output power. The IC features a wide range of protective functions, including input under-voltage protection, output over-voltage protection, and over-current limiting. Additionally, its ability to start up with as little as 30 volts on the drain without external circuitry is critical for functional safety in automotive applications.
Noted Mike Stroka, product marketing engineer at Power Integrations, “Automotive designers rely on the efficiency and low component count of high-voltage power supplies designed around InnoSwitch3-AQ ICs. The increased primary-to-primary creepage and clearance distance between the drain and source pins in the new package provides support for the next generation of EV bus voltages. Power Integrations’ unique InSOP™-28G package enables 1000 VDC to be provided to the primary side, while keeping all other pins safely isolated in pollution degree 2 environments.”
The InnoSwitch3-AQ IC family is designed to reduce the number of components required to implement a power supply by as much as 50 percent, saving space, enhancing reliability, and mitigating component sourcing challenges. Its increased drain-pin width supports high levels of shock and vibration, making it well-suited for applications such as eAxle systems.
The IC’s synchronous rectification, multi-mode valley switching, and discontinuous/continuous conduction mode (DCM/CCM) flyback controller deliver efficiency levels exceeding 90 percent while consuming less than 15 mW at no load. These features make it ideal for applications such as battery management systems, µDC-DC converters, control circuits, and emergency power supplies in main traction inverters.
Availability and Pricing
The 1700 V-rated InnoSwitch3-AQ ICs are priced starting at $6 per unit for 10,000-unit quantities. Sample units are available now, with full production slated for the first quarter of 2025.
