while maintaining cost parity on a per kilowatt-hour basis.

Manufactured at NanoGraf’s Chicago facility, with further expansion planned at its upcoming Flint, Michigan plant, Onyx offers a high-performance, drop-in-ready solution for EVs, consumer electronics, drones, medical devices, and military equipment. The innovative material is designed to meet the growing demand for reliable, efficient, and cost-effective battery technology.

“Silicon anodes have the potential to significantly improve lithium-ion battery performance, but shortcomings in cost, stability, and supply chain resilience have been major barriers,” said NanoGraf CEO Francis Wang. “With Onyx, NanoGraf has addressed these issues to create a material that makes silicon anode technology as ready for manufacturing as graphite. It’s our most energy-dense anode material yet, perfect for the demands of EVs and other real-world applications.”

The Onyx silicon anode is designed to significantly enhance battery performance. It offers a 30% improvement in energy density compared to synthetic graphite, translating to longer ranges for electric vehicles and extended runtimes for portable devices. Its metal-doped silicon oxide core reduces swelling by 75%, which improves battery lifespan and ensures reliability under demanding conditions. Onyx’s cost-effectiveness is another notable feature, as it matches the price point of synthetic graphite while delivering advanced performance.

NanoGraf’s domestic production of Onyx contributes to a resilient and sustainable supply chain. The company avoids the use of silane gas, a costly and volatile material that has posed challenges for silicon anode production in the past. This eco-friendly manufacturing process reduces environmental risks while supporting large-scale scalability.

Onyx is designed for a variety of applications, including electric vehicles where efficiency and range are critical, consumer electronics that require longer battery life, and medical devices and drones where reliability is essential. It also holds potential for military equipment, benefiting from its lightweight and high-capacity capabilities.

“Eliminating silane gas from the anode production process is a huge step forward for the battery industry,” said Wang. “This paves the way for more sustainable, scalable, and cost-effective solutions that set a new standard for innovation in battery manufacturing.”

Currently, Onyx is manufactured at NanoGraf’s Chicago facility, with additional production capacity expected from its new Flint, Michigan plant to meet growing market demand.  For more information about NanoGraf and Onyx™, please click here.
