LG Energy Solution, global industry experts in battery and energy solutions for EVs, energy storage, mobility, IT and other advanced applications, has announced that it has started production at its new 226-acre battery manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan, adding domestic capacity for both energy storage system and EV battery cells. The facility, reportedly designed to reach more than 35 GWh of annual battery production capacity at full scale, will manufacture two battery chemistries for distinct applications.

LG Energy Solution’s new 226-acre battery manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan, will produce LFP cells for energy storage systems and NMC cells for EV applications.

The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells produced in Lansing will support energy storage systems, while higher-energy-density nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells will be manufactured for EV applications. For energy storage customers, the Lansing-produced LFP cells will be integrated by LG Energy Solution Vertech, the company’s U.S. energy storage business, into complete systems for utility, grid-scale, commercial and industrial applications. The plant will also manufacture NMC cells for Toyota. The batteries are expected to support Toyota battery EVs, including the 2027 Highlander EV, which will be assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown, Kentucky. This new Lansing production footprint also gives LG Energy Solution customers additional access to U.S.-manufactured battery cells as automakers, utilities and energy storage developers place greater emphasis on domestic sourcing and regionalized battery supply chains.

LG Energy Solution reports investments of more than $2 billion in the Lansing facility since 2022. The plant currently employs approximately 900 people, with employment expected to reach 1,700 at full-scale production. The operation becomes LG Energy Solution’s second Michigan-based manufacturing facility, joining its existing battery plant in Holland. The company also maintains its North American regional organization and an R&D facility in Troy, Michigan. The company further reports that, since 2010, its cumulative investments in Michigan have exceeded $5 billion. By year-end 2026, the company expects its Michigan workforce to exceed 3,300 employees. The Lansing facility also expands LG Energy Solution’s North American energy storage manufacturing strategy as electricity demand and grid-scale storage requirements continue to grow. DTE Energy is among the utilities expected to use batteries manufactured at the plant for future ESS projects.

LG Energy Solution reports that it plans to have more than 50 GWh of LFP cell manufacturing capacity in North America by year-end 2026. Its planned regional LFP footprint includes wholly owned facilities in Holland and Lansing, Michigan, along with NextStar Energy in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, as well as joint-venture manufacturing operations in Jeffersonville, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee. The company expects approximately 80% of its global ESS battery manufacturing capacity to be located in North America by the end of 2026.

“Today marks a defining milestone for LG Energy Solution,” said David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution. “Lansing will produce advanced batteries that support not only the future of mobility, but also America’s growing energy infrastructure and digital economy.”

The combination of LFP production for stationary energy storage and NMC production for EVs allows the Lansing site to address two of the largest growth areas for North American battery demand from a single manufacturing location.
