Hyundai Motor Group is expanding its R&D operations in Europe with major facility upgrades, including an extension of its Nürburgring test center and the upcoming launch of the Square Campus at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) in March 2025.These investments support advancements in electric vehicle (EV) technology, high-performance development, and sustainable mobility solutions.

The Nürburgring test center, operational since 2013, plays a critical role in Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicle development. The latest expansion adds 834 square meters of new testing facilities, including workshop areas, specialized laboratories, and high-voltage EV charging capabilities. According to Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center, the investment reflects the Group’s focus on EV growth and sustainable innovation. He noted that the expanded facilities will enhance the integration of N-performance technologies with the Group’s EV strategy, while also supporting further advancements in conventional engine technologies.
The Group’s new 25,000-square-meter Square Campus in the Rhine-Main region will establish a new benchmark for European R&D. The facility will house the largest four-wheel noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) dynamometer (dyno) within the Group’s global network, along with advanced chassis and powertrain dynos for controlled vehicle testing. Research efforts will focus on EV technology, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment, and electrification advancements. Johnson emphasized that the investment reinforces the Group’s commitment to Germany’s automotive engineering expertise and provides a collaborative hub for engineers and industry partners.
Noted Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center, “This expansion represents a bold step toward securing the infrastructure needed for the future of mobility. It reflects our confidence in the growth of the EV sector and our commitment to driving sustainable innovation. This serves as a testament to our road to electrification in Europe. Electric high-performance vehicles have always been an important part of our DNA. Our expanded facilities at the Nürburgring will allow us to integrate our N-performance with our EV strategy even more seamlessly. Moreover, we will continue to refine conventional engine technologies. The enhanced facilities at the Nürburgring affirm our commitment to electric high-performance vehicles, which have always been a crucial part of our DNA.”
The Square Campus has been designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating eco-friendly materials, photovoltaic panels, and heat pump systems. It will also feature hybrid workspaces, a rooftop garden, and smart working systems to enhance collaboration. These facility upgrades align with the Group’s goal of achieving zero tailpipe emissions in Europe by 2035 and accelerating sustainable mobility solutions.
The expansion also presents new career opportunities for engineers and professionals in electric powertrain development, ADAS, and vehicle dynamics. Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center encourages interested candidates to explore available positions through its job portal.
