BMW i Ventures has co-led an $11 million seed funding round in California-based Estes Energy Solutions, Inc., a materials and manufacturing innovator advancing next-generation battery pack technology. The round, co-led with Fortescue Ventures and joined by New Systems Ventures and early investor DCVC, brings Estes’ total funding to $20 million to date. The capital will support completion of the company’s chemistry-agnostic battery pack platform and the establishment of domestic manufacturing capacity.

BMW i Ventures’ investment aligns with its strategy to back disruptive technologies enabling the future of electrification. Estes is focused on novel materials, advanced manufacturing processes, and architectural optimizations that aim to redefine performance and economics for high-voltage battery packs in the U.S. market.

Estes’ modular platform includes an LFP-powered variant for cost-sensitive applications and a nickel-powered variant for mass-sensitive applications. Both are suitable for heavy-use environments and are interchangeable, enabling OEMs to serve multiple markets from a single integration effort.

“What makes Estes different isn’t just the unique technology—it’s the people,” said Baris Guzel, Partner at BMW i Ventures. “This is a team that’s been in the trenches, building rugged, high-density battery systems with real-world safety and scale in mind. It’s that rare blend of deep engineering chops, operator mindset, and execution urgency. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with them.”

Estes is seeing strong interest from commercial partners and OEMs across multiple sectors. The company’s pilot manufacturing line will enable it to fulfill strategic opportunities and strengthen the U.S. battery supply chain in line with national priorities.

“We’re experiencing a broadening of demand across new electrification markets. From defense and aviation to marine, rail, and off-highway sectors, the need for the next generation of battery systems is accelerating,” said Dustin Grace, CEO of Estes. “This funding propels us towards serving these markets at the level of performance, economics, and domestic resilience necessary for sustainable growth.”

The company plans to use the new funding to expand its development team, build pilot manufacturing capacity, and deploy systems to early customers beginning in Q4 2025.
