Natrion are industry experts in solid-state electrolyte materials, active battery separators and lithium-metal cell development. The company’s technology platform is centered on LISIC, a flexible ceramic-polymer composite electrolyte used within its Active Separator. The material combines physical separation with solid-state ion transport and is designed for incorporation into established lithium-ion cell-manufacturing processes.

Natrion’s Gen-1 Active Separator is produced as a thin, flexible membrane measuring less than 15 microns. It supports roll-to-roll processing, Z-folding and familiar cell-assembly methods, allowing battery manufacturers to evaluate the technology without adopting an entirely new production architecture. The separator can be configured for use with graphite, silicon and lithium-metal anodes, together with cathode chemistries including NMC, LFP, LMFP, LCO and LNMO. It can also operate with conventional carbonate-based electrolytes or with Natrion’s M3 non-carbonate wetting agent, depending upon the wider cell design. This flexibility allows the Active Separator to support both established lithium-ion chemistries and newer lithium-metal configurations. Natrion has reported 10% to 15% greater available discharge capacity in selected internal pouch-cell comparisons using its Gen-1 separator, although results remain dependent upon the complete cell chemistry, electrode design and operating conditions.

Its Cirrus line uses an anode-free, semi-solid configuration and is currently listed at 450 to more than 500 watt-hours per kilogram. The Stratus line is listed at 400 to more than 450 watt-hours per kilogram, with a different balance of energy density and cycle life. These figures apply to the company’s specified cell configurations rather than to every battery incorporating LISIC.

Natrion’s work spans separator design, electrolyte selection, lithium-metal anode development and complete cell integration, with performance determined by the interaction among those elements. The company’s wider materials portfolio includes X-12 lithium-metal anode technology and M3, a nonflammable, non-carbonate wetting agent developed for use with LISIC and lithium-metal systems. Natrion is also developing materials for sodium-ion batteries, extending the platform into additional battery chemistries.

The company’s manufacturing capabilities are based in Western New York. In 2025, Natrion opened an Active Separator production facility in Cheektowaga. Its first commissioned line provides approximately 250,000 square meters of annual separator throughput, while the broader site is being equipped to support material volumes corresponding to roughly 500 MWh of battery production annually. The Cheektowaga operation provides a domestic source of advanced separator material and supports customer sampling, cell qualification and production-scale development. Natrion’s Active Separator is manufactured in the United States using domestic inputs.

Typical applications for Natrion technologies include electric vehicles, aerospace and defense systems, unmanned platforms, consumer electronics, robotics and stationary energy storage. Founded in 2018, Natrion maintains operations in Binghamton and Buffalo, New York, and Champaign, Illinois.
