About Featured Expert: Group14 Technologies
Group14 Technologies are global industry experts in silicon-carbon anode materials and advanced battery-material manufacturing. The company develops and manufactures SCC55, a silicon-carbon composite designed for use within lithium-ion battery anodes. The material can be blended with graphite or used in silicon-dominant anode formulations, depending upon the energy, power, charging and cycle-life requirements of the finished cell.
Silicon can store more lithium than graphite, but it also expands and contracts as the battery is charged and discharged. Group14 addresses this through a porous hard-carbon structure that contains silicon within the composite while providing space for volumetric expansion. The carbon framework also maintains conductive pathways through the electrode and helps manage reactions between the active material and the electrolyte.

The company established its first commercial Battery Active Materials facility, BAM-1, in Woodinville, Washington. The site has been in operation since 2021 and supports commercial production and customer supply of SCC55. Group14 later expanded its manufacturing base through BAM-3 in Sangju, South Korea. The facility is designed for annual production of up to 2,000 metric tons of SCC55, an amount the company equates to approximately 10 GWh of battery capacity. Group14 acquired full ownership of the operation in 2025 and began ramping EV-scale production there in 2026.
In Washington state, the company is also completing BAM-2 in Moses Lake. The facility is being developed around a modular manufacturing model, with initial annual capacity of 2,000 metric tons of SCC55, or approximately 10 GWh, per module. Group14 expects production to begin in 2026 and has designed the site to accommodate additional manufacturing modules over time.
Group14’s work extends from the structure of the anode material through its integration into commercial battery-manufacturing systems. This includes the production consistency, electrode processing and cell qualification requirements associated with moving a new active material into larger-volume use. SCC55 has already been incorporated into commercial consumer-electronics batteries and is also being developed and qualified for automotive, aviation, data-center, grid-storage and other battery-related applications. Reported performance varies by cell chemistry, material loading and operating conditions and is therefore specific to the individual battery design.
Typical applications for Group14 technologies include electric vehicles, electric aviation, unmanned aerial systems, consumer electronics, data-center power systems, robotics, light electric mobility and stationary energy storage.
