ABB Simplifies Energy Storage with BESS-as-a-Service Model

Battery and Electrification Energy Monitoring and Management Systems Sustainability

ABB has launched its new Battery Energy Storage Systems-as-a-Service (BESS-as-a-Service) offering, a flexible, zero-CapEx model designed to help companies accelerate the shift to clean, resilient, and affordable energy.

The solution removes financial and operational barriers to battery storage deployment, positioning it to help businesses enhance energy security, reduce emissions, and unlock new revenue opportunities.

With global demand for energy storage expected to grow dramatically, ABB’s new model offers a turnkey path to energy independence and sustainability. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global storage capacity is projected to increase sixfold by 2030. Commercial and industrial systems alone are expected to surge nearly tenfold to 560 GWh, underscoring the essential role of battery energy storage in enabling cleaner and more reliable power systems.

Requiring no upfront capital investment, BESS-as-a-Service enables companies in sectors such as data centers, transportation, logistics, and commercial real estate to access advanced energy storage through a predictable quarterly service fee. ABB’s solution encompasses hardware, software, and comprehensive lifecycle support, with ABB managing deployment, maintenance, and optimization, enabling customers to focus on their core operations.

“In today’s volatile energy market, businesses need reliability and cost predictability above all else,” said Stuart Thompson, Division President of ABB Electrification Service Division. “Customers tell us that while they want to deploy the latest technologies to improve energy security and reduce their emissions and costs, they face financial obstacles. By shifting from capital expenditure to a more predictable operational expenditure approach, ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service enables businesses to immediately strengthen their energy security, slash peak demand charges, and generate new revenue streams.”

The technology-agnostic model is designed to work with any battery type, offering customers the flexibility to adopt new innovations without vendor lock-in. It also features performance guarantees and includes maintenance cost coverage and energy trading brokerage fees. ABB manages participation in energy markets to ensure customers receive immediate financial benefits from selling excess stored energy.

ABB is currently conducting feasibility assessments with prospective customers to validate positive financial outcomes before deployment. These assessments are required prior to installation, helping customers achieve net financial gains from the outset.

“We see BESS-as-a-Service as not just a new offering but a strategic lever for the division’s growth and innovation,” added Thompson. “We see significant potential to scale this globally, especially as more industries seek flexible, low-risk pathways to decarbonization. With BESS-as-a-Service, we are redefining the economics of clean energy adoption—delivering the flexibility and financial returns businesses need to decarbonize with confidence. It allows businesses to adopt advanced energy solutions without the financial strain of large capital investment and empowers them to take control of their energy needs, strengthen their resilience and unlock new value from their assets.”

To support the offering, ABB has built a strategic ecosystem of expert partners in energy monitoring, data analytics, and financial modeling.  For more information, visit: https://bess-as-a-service.abb.com/
